Chart paper versus digital recording

Conventional chart recorder on paper
Digital recording in .PDF & binary file
conventional temperature recording on paper
conventional to modern recording
modern digital temperature recorder

Disadvantages of chart paper recording:

  • finding historical data takes a lot of time
  • only 1 hardcopy on paper available: when paper is lost: no recording
  • when not enough paper in recorder: no recording
  • when pen in recorder is out of ink: no recording
  • recording chart paper is expensive (and will become even more expensive)
  • recording on papier is not very accurate (achieving +/- 1°C measurement accuracy on a 1200°C measurement range is difficult to achieve on paper registration)
  • physical storage of recorded chart paper necessary over a long time
  • transport of the recorder can influence the calibration of the measurements: for certain processes on-site calibration after transport is mandatory

Advantages of digital recording:

  • historical data can be easily found back with just a few mouse clicks and even remotely with PC/tablet or Smartphone
  • measurement data can be shared quickly & easily with co-workers for quick analysis process problems
  • a .PDF digital file recording can be printed many times
  • high accuracy of measurement data (+/- 0.1°C accuracy no problem at all)
  • measurement data is stored digitally on CF/SD-card and/or on a (cloud-based) server: no or much less physical storage necessary for the data.
  • measurements cannot be modified/falsified because they are stored in a binary file
  • The .PDF file that is generated from the binary file can be digitally signed for data evidence
  • transport of the recorder does not influence the accuracy of the measurements.
Digital process parameter recording leads to:
  • reliable, dependable, accurate & transparent process parameter recording
  • cost & time savings
  • process optimalization
  • quality improvement
